International Management

Course Introduction

Multinational corporations (MNCs) have become prominent actors in the world economy and world politics. The largest MNCs realise an ever growing percentage of revenue outside their home markets. The course will examine strategy, structure, organisation and HR implications of MNCs at different stages of their development. The course will particularly focus on the international strategic positioning and trade-offs facing MNCs in the global market place. In addition, the course will address implications for the individual international manager, including the skills and competencies required for a successful global career.

Course Lecturer

Prof. Dr. Winfried Ruigrok is Dean of the Executive School of Management, Technology & Law at the University of St.Gallen. He has been a professor of International Management since 1996 and has been the Director of the Research Institute for International Management (FIM-HSG) since 1997. His research focuses on internationalisation strategies and performance implications, international careers, the composition of top management teams and boards, multicultural management, and corporate governance. His papers have been published in leading scholarly and popular outlets. He previously worked at the Warwick Business School (UK), European Commission (Belgium), Rotterdam School of Management (NL), University of Amsterdam (NL), and Netherlands International Development Organisation (NL). He has worked with numerous international companies and organisations, including Deutsche Post, Ernst & Young, European Commission, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Gore, Henkel, Hilti, Karstadt Quelle, Lonza, Nissan, Otto Versand, PricewaterhouseCoopers, RWE, and the Canton of St.Gallen.
